Calculating Pitching Speed with a Stopwatch
by
John Klinkenborg

On the FastSports Discussion Board, there was a discussion about calculating the speed of pitch with a stopwatch (if you can't afford a radar gun).

There are some considerations to take into account when using this method. While pitchers "pitch" from 40' at 12U-18U and 35' at 10U, the actual point of release may be much closer to the plate. There is also some "play" in the time it takes to start/stop the watch. But with a little practice and comparing your results with a radar gun, you may be able to become quite accurate using this method.

John Klinkenborg created speed tables for you to quickly calculate the speed of a pitch at various distances.

The file is in Adobe Acrobat format.
